How To Reconcile Perceptions

Highly sensitive people often have difficulty reconciling the many pieces of energetic information that they take in. Most of us try to slow down in a world that is constantly pressuring us to go faster so that we can process and understand what we are receiving before we act. Unfortunately it is not always enough to do so.

So what do we do to handle energy better?

Energy Is Only Information

It can be useful to think of energy as information. That way of looking at the complex energies around us can help us to detach from and not unnecessarily personalize what is happening. When we do that we can summon our best self to the table to help us cope with and respond to others.

Being detached, taking the high road and trying to respond from a spiritual place are good but often they do not seem to be enough. We can find ourselves repeating the same energy experiences and feeling depleted and sometimes victimized, which sometime we are. Too often our confidence takes a hit because we often think that we should be able to come up with some sort of answer or strategy that lets arrive at a new place socially and also inside where the clouds part and all is well again. We seek resolution and a spirit of friendship where we find conflict and unhappiness.

I am particularly guilty of this because I have high expectations of myself but nonetheless my efforts or intentions do not replace the intentions and efforts of others. My magic wand that I like to try to invoke in search of happy endings fails me often. It can cause us to feel discouraged, alone and angry.

The Problem With Event Based Thinking

I think that when we are event based in our perceptions we can lose our perspective and sink under the weight of perceptual conflicts which can create resistance and hurt feelings in our relationships. When we do that we turn the other person into an event in our lives. And we love them based on an event – which is the origin of conditional love – I will love this person when… they become more organized (an event) a better dancer (an event – I am a terrible dancer) etc. You can create your own scenarios.

There is nothing wrong with wanting the events of our lives to go well and to be enjoyable. However, life is about more than pleasure and the rest of the world is not just a means to an end for our pleasure. To treat others that way is to exploit them.

Embracing Process

Once we see our lives as more than a series of events we can begin to relax into our lives and I do not mean thinking of it as a journey which in one way it is, of course. I mean seeking to recognize a larger perspective where we and our species are on a larger developmental process beyond the individual events of our lives. Group consciousness rules and all of our efforts to be nice to others and treat them well will have no impact if those behaviors are not appreciated. This is not to say that we should stop doing our part because everything matters eventually. However, we need to be honest with ourselves that we each impact group consciousness a little bit at a time and it takes a long time for it to add up to change.

Leading From Integrity

There is a part of us that weighs up everything and forms conclusions. It is the part of us that maintains our balance and samity. That is true of us and everyone else. When life is crazy, when fear and pain take over that part of us is often list in our day to day interactions. Therefore the more we can activate our perspective and our awareness of the long term process of social consciousness and human development the easier it is for us to relax into life.

There is a huge upside. Having process awareness and perspective releases us from inappropriately tight and allows us to access our natural flow which helps us then make more intelligent decisions. It will helps us take all of the energy we take in with a grain of salt and focus our attention appropriately. It will provide us with greater control without being controlling. And that is a great way to live.
